Repair or replace?
Most water heater calls come down to one question: is this a part, or is the tank itself failing?
- Usually repairable: a gas heater with a bad thermocouple, flame sensor or igniter; an electric heater with a burned-out element or failed thermostat; a leaking drain valve; a temperature and pressure relief valve that drips.
- Usually time to replace: water leaking from the tank body or the bottom seam, rust-colored hot water from a tank that is more than about ten years old, or a tank so packed with sediment that it rumbles and runs out of hot water quickly. A tank that rusts through cannot be patched.
The age is usually printed in the serial number on the label. If you send a photo of the label with your request, it helps a lot.
Hard water and sediment
Fort Wayne City Utilities water averages about 122 mg/L of hardness, roughly 7 grains per gallon (Fort Wayne City Utilities, 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report). When that water is heated, some of the minerals fall out as scale and settle on the bottom of the tank. In a gas heater, the layer of sediment insulates the water from the burner, so the heater works harder and you hear popping or rumbling. In an electric heater, scale coats the lower element and can burn it out. Homes on private wells, where hardness and iron are often higher, see this faster.
Draining a few gallons from the tank once or twice a year flushes out loose sediment. If the drain valve has never been opened on an older tank, it may leak once it is used, so it is worth doing with a replacement valve on hand, or asking for it as part of a service visit. A water softener reduces scale in the tank and on tankless heat exchangers.
Gas, electric or tankless
Tank water heaters
Most Fort Wayne homes have a 40- or 50-gallon tank in the basement. Gas units are common where there is a natural gas line; electric units are common in homes without gas and in some newer subdivisions. Replacing like with like is usually the simplest job. Changing fuel types or moving the heater means new gas piping, venting or wiring.
Venting
Older gas water heaters often vent into a chimney shared with a furnace. When a high-efficiency furnace is installed and vents out the side wall, the water heater may be left alone in a chimney that is now too big for it, which can cause poor draft and condensation. That is worth checking when a water heater is replaced. High-efficiency and power-vent water heaters vent through plastic pipe instead.
Tankless
Tankless water heaters heat water as it flows, so they do not run out the way a tank does and they save space. They need correct gas line sizing, venting and, in hard water, regular descaling. In Fort Wayne winters the incoming water is very cold, so a tankless unit has to raise it a lot; sizing for how many showers and fixtures run at once matters more here than in warmer places.
Signs a water heater needs attention
- No hot water, or hot water that runs out quickly.
- Rust-colored hot water while the cold runs clear.
- Popping, banging or rumbling as the burner or element runs.
- Water around the base, or a relief valve that drips or has discharged.
- A rotten-egg smell in the hot water (often a reaction with the anode rod, more common with well water).
- A gas smell near the heater: leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
If the tank is leaking now
- Close the cold-water inlet valve on top of the heater.
- For electric, turn off the breaker. For gas, turn the control knob to "off" or "pilot."
- If water is pooling, attach a garden hose to the drain valve and run it to the floor drain or sump pit.
- Send the form with the brand, size and fuel type, and we'll call you back.
Questions to ask about a replacement
- What size and type do you suggest for this household, and why?
- Is a permit and inspection included?
- Will the venting, gas line, expansion tank and relief valve discharge be brought up to current code?
- What happens to the old tank?
- What manufacturer warranty comes with the new heater?

Frequently asked questions
How long does a water heater last in Fort Wayne?
Tank water heaters commonly last around 8 to 12 years. Moderately hard city water and harder well water both add sediment, so flushing and anode checks help a tank last.
Why does my water heater make popping noises?
Usually sediment on the bottom of the tank. Water trapped under the scale boils and pops as the burner runs. Flushing helps if the buildup is not too heavy.
Should I switch to tankless?
Tankless units save space and do not run out of hot water, but they need the right gas line, venting and descaling. Very cold winter inlet water means careful sizing.
Can a leaking water heater be repaired?
If the leak is from a valve or fitting, often yes. If water is coming from the tank itself, it needs to be replaced.
Do I need a permit to replace a water heater?
Water heater replacements commonly require a permit and inspection. Ask whether it is included in the quote.
