Toilets
Running toilet
A toilet that refills on its own or hisses is usually a worn flapper, a chain that is too short, or a fill valve set too high so water spills into the overflow tube. Fort Wayne City Utilities says a worn flapper alone can waste up to 200 gallons a day (Fort Wayne City Utilities, 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report). Flappers and fill valves are inexpensive parts, but older or less common toilets sometimes need a specific part to seal properly.
Leaking at the base
Water around the base after flushing usually means the wax ring has failed, often because the toilet rocks. Ignored, it rots the subfloor and stains the ceiling below. The fix is pulling the toilet, replacing the seal, and fixing the flange or shimming the toilet so it does not rock.
Clogs that keep coming back
Repeated clogs in one toilet may be something stuck in the trapway (a toy, a hair pick), an older low-flow model that never flushed well, or a problem farther down the line. If other drains are slow too, see drain cleaning.
Replacing a toilet
Modern WaterSense-labeled toilets use 1.28 gallons per flush or less, compared with 3.5 gallons or more for many older models, and many flush better than the first generation of low-flow toilets did. Replacement is a good time to replace the supply line and shutoff valve too.
Faucets and showers
Drips
A dripping faucet usually needs a new cartridge, washer or O-ring, depending on the design. Single-handle cartridge faucets are common in newer homes; older two-handle faucets use washers and seats.
Low flow and sputtering
With moderately hard city water and harder well water, mineral scale builds up in faucet aerators and shower heads. Unscrewing the aerator and soaking it in vinegar often restores flow. If the whole house has low pressure, the cause may be a partly closed valve, a failing pressure regulator, or old galvanized pipe narrowed by rust. See repiping.
Shower valves
A shower that swings from hot to cold when someone flushes may have an older valve without pressure balancing, or a balancing cartridge that has worn out. Replacing a shower valve usually means opening the wall behind it or working through an access panel.
Shutoff valves
Every toilet and sink should have its own shutoff. In many older Fort Wayne homes, those valves have not been turned in decades and either will not close or start leaking when they are. Replacing them with quarter-turn valves makes the next repair, and the next emergency, much easier.
Outdoor faucets
A hose bibb that leaks inside the basement wall in spring is often one that froze with a hose attached. Frost-free hose bibbs, which shut off the water inside the heated space, are a common upgrade in northern Indiana.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my toilet run by itself?
Usually a worn flapper letting water seep into the bowl, or a fill valve set too high. Both are simple parts.
Is it worth fixing a dripping faucet?
Yes. A steady drip wastes a surprising amount of water, and the fix is often a cartridge or washer.
Why is my shower pressure low?
Often mineral scale in the shower head. If every fixture is low, it may be a valve, a regulator or old galvanized pipe.
What is a frost-free hose bibb?
An outdoor faucet whose valve sits inside the heated wall, so the water in it does not freeze. Remove the hose in fall for it to work.
Should I replace an old toilet?
If it uses 3.5 gallons or more per flush, clogs often or is cracked, a WaterSense model can save water and flush well.
