What a backwater valve does
A backwater valve (also called a backflow prevention device on the building sewer) sits in your private sewer line and closes when sewage tries to flow backward toward the house. That protects fixtures and floor drains when the public sewer is full during heavy rain (Fort Wayne City Utilities, Prepare for Heavy Precipitation).
It does not fix a clog in your own lateral. If roots or a break are blocking your line, you still need sewer line repair.
Why Fort Wayne talks about them
Parts of the city have combined sewers. City Utilities' long-term projects, including the Three Rivers tunnel completed in 2024, aim to reduce overflows and neighborhood backups (Fort Wayne City Utilities, 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report). Your own backwater valve and a working sump pump are still the on-property defenses that matter on a bad night.
What installation involves
- Camera or layout to find the right spot on the building sewer.
- Excavation (basement floor, exterior, or both depending on the house).
- Valve, cleanout access and proper grade.
- Permit and inspection as required.
- Restoration of floor or yard.
While the valve is closed during a surcharge, water you use inside cannot drain — so you pause laundry and showers until the public system recovers.
Maintenance
Valves need periodic checking so the flap or gate moves freely. Ask the installer how to access and inspect yours.

Fort Wayne plumbing FAQs
Will a backwater valve stop groundwater seepage?
No. Clear water rising around the basement edges is usually a sump / drainage issue, not a sewer backflow issue.
Do I need a permit?
Usually yes. Ask the contractor to include permit and inspection in the quote.
Can I use water while it is closed?
Limit indoor water use during a surcharge; fixtures cannot drain while the valve is closed.
