Grabill is a town of about 1,100 people (1,112 at the 2020 census) in Cedar Creek Township in northeast Allen County. It is known for its antique stores and for the Amish farms that surround it.
Plumbing in and around Grabill
Wells and pressure tanks
Many homes outside town rely on private wells. Common problems include a pressure switch that will not cut in or out, a waterlogged pressure tank that makes the pump short-cycle, and a well pump that is wearing out. Low or pulsing pressure throughout the house is the usual sign.
Hard water and iron
Well water in northeast Indiana is often hard, sometimes with iron that leaves orange stains. A softener, sometimes paired with an iron filter, protects water heaters and fixtures.
Septic systems
Slow drains in every fixture, gurgling and soggy ground over the drain field point to septic trouble rather than a pipe clog. Keeping wipes, grease and excess food waste out of the system extends its life.
Water heaters
Hard well water fills tanks with sediment faster, so flushing once or twice a year and checking the anode rod are worth doing.
Cold weather
Pipes in garages, shops and barns, and the line from the well to the house where it enters the basement, need protection in January.
