A suburb that became part of the city

Waynedale was founded by Abner Elzey in 1921 as an unincorporated community southwest of Fort Wayne. The City Council voted to annex it in 1957, adding 5.27 square miles and nearly 6,000 residents (The Waynedale News, The Founding of Our Community). Much of the housing went up from the 1920s through the 1960s, and newer homes fill in around the edges.

Plumbing in Waynedale homes

Mid-century supply lines

Homes from the 1940s and 1950s often have copper supply lines, sometimes mixed with galvanized steel in the oldest houses. Copper from that era can develop pinhole leaks; galvanized narrows and rusts.

Basements, crawlspaces and slabs

Waynedale has a mix. Crawlspace homes have pipes exposed to cold air; City Utilities suggests closing crawlspace vents in winter, insulating pipes in unheated areas, and protecting meters located in crawlspaces or garages, which are the owner's responsibility (Fort Wayne City Utilities, Cold Weather Precautions). Basement homes often have sump pumps and floor drains.

Water heaters

Many homes have had several water heaters over the years. Replacement is a good time to check the venting, the gas line and the expansion tank.

Sewers and roots

Established yards mean established tree roots, and clay or early plastic building sewers can let them in.
