Plumbing in Aboite and Southwest Fort Wayne
Aboite's subdivisions are mostly from the 1970s on, so the issues are less about century-old pipe and more about water heaters, sump pumps and the plumbing materials of each decade. Request a free quote and we'll call you back.

The area
Aboite Township in southwest Allen County grew quickly in recent decades, from about 28,000 residents in 2000 to nearly 36,000 in 2010. Much of it was annexed into Fort Wayne in 2006, and today "Aboite" is used for the whole southwest side, with its lakes, wooded subdivisions and newer neighborhoods along the Jefferson Boulevard and Illinois Road corridors.
Water and sewer in the southwest
For years, much of the area got water from Aqua Indiana's well-supplied system. The City of Fort Wayne took over that water system in 2014, so many southwest homes now get City Utilities water from the Three Rivers Filtration Plant, with average hardness around 122 mg/L (Fort Wayne City Utilities, 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report). Sewer service in parts of the southwest has come from Aqua Indiana rather than City Utilities, and some older homes on larger lots still use septic systems. Your bill tells you who provides your sewer, and that decides who to call when there is a problem on the public side.
Plumbing by decade
- 1970s and 1980s homes: copper supply lines, original water heaters long since replaced, and sometimes polybutylene, which was used into the mid-1990s and is known for failing at fittings.
- 1990s and 2000s homes: CPVC or early PEX supply lines, plastic drains, finished basements with sump pumps.
- Newer homes: PEX, high-efficiency or tankless water heaters, and builder-grade fixtures that are reaching the age for replacement.
Finished basements and sump pumps
Many Aboite homes have finished basements, which raises the stakes when a sump pump fails. A battery backup, a high-water alarm and a check of the pump before spring are cheap compared with replacing carpet and drywall. City Utilities also recommends backwater valves in backup-prone areas (Fort Wayne City Utilities, Prepare for Heavy Precipitation). See sump pumps.

Aboite plumbing FAQs
Who supplies water in Aboite?
Many southwest Fort Wayne homes get water from Fort Wayne City Utilities, which took over Aqua Indiana's southwest water system in 2014. Check your bill.
Who handles my sewer in southwest Fort Wayne?
It depends on the area: City Utilities, Aqua Indiana, or a private septic system. Your bill shows which.
Do I have polybutylene pipe?
Homes built from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s sometimes do. Look for gray plastic supply pipe, often stamped PB2110.
Is a battery backup sump pump worth it in a finished basement?
Usually, yes. Pump failures and power outages tend to come in the same storms.
