The city

New Haven is a city of 15,843 people (2020 census) immediately east of Fort Wayne, mostly along the south bank of the Maumee River. Its older blocks near downtown date to the late 1800s and early 1900s, and much of its growth since has been post-war and newer subdivisions.

Water and sewer

New Haven does not pump its own groundwater for drinking. It buys treated water from Fort Wayne City Utilities, which comes from the St. Joseph River through the Three Rivers Filtration Plant, and runs its own distribution system (City of New Haven, Utility Providers). In 2024 the two cities renewed a long-term agreement for water supply and wastewater treatment. That means New Haven tap water has the same moderate hardness as Fort Wayne's, about 122 mg/L on average (Fort Wayne City Utilities, 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report), while billing, meters and local mains are New Haven's.

For a water main or public sewer problem, call New Haven's utility office rather than Fort Wayne's 311. The line from the house to the public system is generally the owner's to maintain.

Common issues

  • Older homes near the river: galvanized supply lines, cast-iron drains and clay sewers with roots. If your home predates 1937, check the service line material.
  • Basements: sump pumps working hard in spring, and floor drains that are the first place a sewer backup shows.
  • Newer subdivisions: water heater replacements, fixture upgrades and the occasional polybutylene or early PEX issue.
  • Winter: frozen pipes on outside walls and in garages.

Tell us your address and the problem, and we'll call you back.
